Dear Leon County Commission:
I would like to thank you for listening to the concerns of the LGBT community at last night's lengthy Commission meeting. I truly appreciate your vote in favor of creating the new Human Relations Advisory Committee sponsored by Commissioner Dailey. The creation of this committee is an important step in recognizing the value of all the citizens of Leon County. I agree with Commissioner Proctor that this should be a committee that has the ability to accomplish things, and I am pleased that you voted to create such a committee. Each Commissioner speaking in favor of creating the Committee means a lot to me personally.
I appreciate the discussion that took place at the Commission meeting and the concerns expressed for the LGBT Community. I know that the Leon County Commission seeks to protect and safeguard the right and opportunity of all persons to be free from discrimination. Currently, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender citizens of Leon County have no protection against discrimination, unlike every other citizen. Commissioners' Thaell and Rackleff raised the need to amend the housing code to add gender identity or expression and to provide employment protections. I wish to see this raised in a public hearing in the near future.
I think most people recognize that discriminatory practices are contrary to the public policy of the county and are a menace to the public peace and welfare of our citizens. A number of citizens testified at the July 14th meeting about their experiences of discrimination. Moving toward eliminating discriminatory practices within the county and providing a safe and welcoming place for everyone is something that I know you support. After all, Chapter 9 of the Leon County Code is entitled, "Human Rights."
I know that the Human Relations Advisory Committee will review a broad range of discrimination issues. I appreciate that LGBT concerns are among the crucial areas of discussion, and will finally have a forum within Leon County. I hope you will carefully review the LGBT issues that are being raised and that will come from the new Advisory Committee. Once more, I would like to personally thank you for being part of the unanimous vote in favor of the creation of the Human Relations Advisory Committee.
Sincerely,
